Summer Soulstice (UK)
In 2006 a dear friend & one of Barnet’s favourite sons, passed away from cancer in the USA where he had lived for many years. As a tribute to Andy Weekes & his passion of soul music, his family & close friends organised a special event for the local community & the extended soul family in his home town which since it’s first event in 2007, has grown in size & popularity year on year.
After the first Summer Soulstice was held at Barnet Elizabethans RFC, the annual party moved a couple of miles down the road to the Old Elizabethans Memorial Playing Fields, a place that Andy enjoyed going to & got hours of pleasure playing cricket, football & rugby during the 1980’s. All of these things he did to the soundtrack of his life – classic & modern soul.
After almost 12 years, this special family friendly all-dayer has become a firm favourite on the soul music event calendar & draws people from near & far. People come from all over the UK each year to enjoy “soul on a Summer’s day” & we have regular visitors from France, Germany & Sweden. Even Andy’s own family have visited from California on several occasions, including his only son Braedon.
With this continued support & all the valued help from our crew members, volunteers, DJ’s, artists, as well as our hosts Old Elizabethans, we continue to swell the coffers of our chosen charity Cherry Lodge Cancer Care (& other local worthy causes), passing the £270,000 fundraising mark in 2017.
