Green Events & Innovations Conference 2017 - discount for AFO members
A Greener Festival and ILMC are excited to release news of an important session that will take place at the forthcoming GEI9 in March...
The Environmental Impact of Fireworks
Nothing captures the right degree of pomp like a firework display, and these increasingly popular and ever more spectacular displays are now a common addition to many open-air events and festivals. But what impact do these dazzling displays have on the environment?
These colourful explosives contain toxic agents such as gunpowder (to make them fly) and metallic compounds (to give them colour), and produce harmful, often carcinogenic fumes and toxins that shower the planet, polluting its soil and waters, and negatively impacting the air that we earthlings breathe.
Chaired by Aymeric Lecomte, festival auditor for A Greener Festival, the session will break new ground as it considers the very real impact that fireworks have on the planet and what is being done to reduce this environmental impact.
The session will introduce a number of brand new innovations that are being developed as less dangerous and less destructive alternatives to traditional firework displays.
Aymeric became passionate about festivals and events after being thrown into event-planning whilst studying for a degree in engineering. He has since completed an MSc in Festival Management, and more recently commenced a research degree in relation to the leadership of sustainable festivals.
As festival auditor for A Greener Festival, Aymeric has assessed a variety of events from Glastonbury Festival to urban Bona Nit Barcelona. He uses these experiences to continuously learn and meet like-minded people with whom he can help create fun events in a respectful way for both people and the natural environment.

The En Indy Awards
The story of David and Goliath is well known but the reality is that Goliath normally wins and this is reflected in many industry awards programmes. EN introduced The Indy Award recently to cater for exactly this – to allow smaller, independent organisers to compete with their peers rather than the global behemoths we know and love.
